How marketing influences our everyday lives

An everyday choice between unbranded products

We choose a coffee, open an app or walk into a shop. These seem like simple actions, but each takes place within a designed environment: colours, packaging, words and routes help shape what we notice and how we interpret it.

Marketing enters everyday life through these details. Advertising is its most visible part, but the work also includes product positioning, the shopping experience and the relationship a brand builds over time.

Packaging can suggest care, practicality or exclusivity. The arrangement of a shelf makes some products more noticeable than others. App notifications invite us back; a shop window can help us imagine a lifestyle before showing us a price.

When choosing a brand, we often consider factors beyond physical quality: familiarity, values, aesthetics and memories. These associations are part of our experience and help explain why similar products can be perceived so differently.

As a communication professional, I find it interesting to observe these mechanisms in my own behaviour too. What caught my attention? What promise did I recognise? Am I choosing to meet a real need, or because of an image I want to move towards?

Awareness helps us read the messages we receive more carefully. We can recognise the promotional nature of content, compare alternatives and distinguish a credible promise from an impression that has little relevance to us.

This attention is useful for businesses too. Responsible communication helps people understand what they are choosing and sets realistic expectations. A relationship lasts longer when the experience delivers on the promise.

Marketing is part of the environment we live in. Observing it with curiosity and a critical eye allows us to choose more independently and, sometimes, to understand better what we value.
