August: the month when everyone seems happy (at least on social media)

August has a special talent: it somehow convinces us that the whole world has moved to the beach.

Open any social media app and you’ll find perfect sunsets, seaside aperitifs, feet in the sand, infinity pools, boats, breathtaking mountains, and smiles that look as though they’ve stepped out of an advertising campaign.

For a few weeks, it almost seems as if nobody is working, nobody has any problems, and—most of all—everyone is living the best summer of their lives.

Then you close the app… and reality quietly knocks at the door.

Some people are working while everyone else is on holiday. Some stay in town because a parent needs care. Some choose not to travel. Others simply can’t afford to. And there are those who are busy building a new professional chapter or trying to rebuild after a difficult period.

Yet these stories rarely make it into a photograph.

Perhaps that’s the greatest illusion of summer: believing that happiness needs to be posted in order to be real.

The truth is far less spectacular—but infinitely more authentic.

Some of the best summers are made of simple moments: dinner with friends, finally opening that book you’ve been meaning to read, an evening walk at sunset, a phone call you’ve been waiting for, or a quiet coffee without constantly checking the time.

These moments may never collect thousands of likes, but they’re often the ones we remember the longest.

In the end, August isn’t a competition to see who travels the farthest, visits the most beautiful beaches, or posts the perfect picture. It’s an invitation to slow down. To rediscover the increasingly rare luxury of listening to your own thoughts without the constant noise of everyday life.

And if your summer doesn’t look like the one you see online, don’t worry.

Holidays come to an end.

Photos disappear into the endless stream of social media.

But peace of mind doesn’t depend on where we are. It depends on how we choose to live the time we’ve been given.
